Digital Book Reader

This digital book reader is taking the print world by storm!

Everyone knows that the print industry, i.e.  manufacturers of books, newspapers, and magazines, is a dying industry, with the proliferation of their content on the internet.  But this book reader device is possibly positioned to save the dinosaur, the print industry, from extinction.

The idea for such a device has been kicked around for years before Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, made it happen.  Bezos just recently introduced the Kindle DX, the newest model to hit the market over its predecessors, Kindle and Kindle 2.  It was designed as a portable device, though it cant fit in your pocket.  There are accessory bags/holders available for it.  It can store 285,000 downloads of digital content such as ebooks, newspapers, and weblogs.

It has a larger display screen,in black and white, at 9.7 inches and the content can be viewed sideways, like a landscape-style document.  It doesnt come with the usual flicker that accompanies most LCD screens and so it is very viewable and user-friendly.

The Kindle DX's price includes lifetime wireless access with no extra connection fees, and runs on Sprints Nextel network.    This wireless access is the main reason why Kindles are outpacing the Sony electronic reader.  Sony's reader requires a connection to a computer to download anything.  It also has a battery that lasts up to 2 weeks.

If you love your old newspaper, then newspaper subscriptions are available for up to $14.99/mo. and are on top of the best sellers list at Amazon due to Kindle sales.  This proves that people are still willing to buy news, in the form of daily content for their Kindles, but nevertheless, they are willing to buy news, and not go get it for free off the internet.  Whats the motivation?  Jeff Bezos says, "But I find it hard to believe that the primary way of reading newspapers 10-plus years from now is going to be on printed paper." (Bezos 71).

Kindles have become popular with business travelers in particular.  Take a look next time you fly business class, or take a gander at those who are, and try to see how many travelers have Kindles or some kind of electronic book reader in hand.  More competing brands are in the works due to the success of Kindle.  My guess is that they will learn from Sony's mistake and use wireless connections too.

Currently, there is no advertising on electronic readers but expect that to change in the future with subsequent versions of these devices.

The Future of Digital Book Readers

Expect the introduction of advertising.
Expect color display screens.
Expect the ability to interact with other users of the device.
These device could very well save the print industry. Expect the print industry to become very happy.

The bottom line is that customers love these things, and are shelling out the money for them as well as for daily content.
